Are we Reading more or less?

New technologies have had an equally huge impact on our world in a much shorter time. Just think of life without television, radio, and telecommunications: it almost seems impossible to imagine our world without these conveniences. They've become a huge part of modern life and many people spend hours each day using these media. Computers have grabbed a large slice of our available time and energies. To top it all off, the Internet, the medium that allows us to access the information playground that is the World Wide Web, has provided a whole new medium for information exchange. Although printed media still commands significant sales, you can read many of the same materials on-line via the World Wide Web. Books, traditional magazines, and journals are now distributed electronically. Blogs and other information resources (e.g. Wikipedia) are easily accessible, and searchable, on-line. There's plenty of material out there to read on paper and on computer screens. Are we still reading as much as we used to?

Reading habits are changing. What we read and how we read is evolving over time. But are we reading less than we used to? I don't think so!

 What do you think?

  3. Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. Without books, the development of civilization would have been impossible. They are engines of change (as a poet said), windows on the world and lighthouses erected in the sea of time. They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print.

  4. I do agree with you that our reading habits are changing. We are now developing what we call digital brains because we are currently reading a lot off screens. However, our concern should be whether our reading is effective or not. We may be reading more than we used or not. But we should keep in my mind that what is important is to read in depth in order to process the information. What usually happens when reading off screens is that we start scrolling up and down and get distracted by pictures and other factors. We also usually skim through the texts, looking for key words. So we should be attentive to the way we read, not how much we read.

  5. "digital brains" is a logical explanation; but what i meant in my post that we are reading the headings only, we skim through the text to take what we need but without any inclination toward seeking additional knowledge. for example, we used to read novels of thousands and thousands of pages and we really enjoyed it, but now a very brief summaries are available, so we tend to use the shorter way to get what we need.

  7. Ofcourse technology have invaded our houses and minds, now we can notice that we prefer to spend time over the internet or look for certain information online rather than looking for it in a book. The internet have made it easier for people to search for different things but still we need to focus on the importance of using books. Reading is an important skill that could be improved through reading lots of books, some might say that we can read form the internet but recent researches have shown that reading from books is much more better for our minds and for improving our skills from books rather than from the internet.

  8. I think we are reading more, thanks to technological innovations like the internet - but I think that the quality of our reading material has drastically declined ...

  9. I have never read an ebook and I would never do! And I also insist on reading second hand books. They're cheaper and much more environmentally friendly! I can't imagine reading a book without holding it in my hand and being able to touch and smell it...it just wouldn't be the same! Though, I think a lot of people are reading less for pleasure.

  10. there are different forms of reading material that we read off each and every day, but the experience o reading a poem off from a torn novel, the posture that it demands when we read such book, and the attitude that we possess in this case are very different. This may seem very common thing to say and even a little bit dreamy, but it's a fact and every body who reads off from an old book can relate, the problem is that we don't allow ourselves the enough time to read properly, because every reading material demands a different reading context.

  11. i think that we have higher expectations from technology ,reading is very vital for human development but nowadays we are neglecting the importance of reading books claiming not to have enough time ,counting all the time on the internet which is totally wrong .the Internet has had a profound impact on the ways people read for information and pleasure. However, research also reveals that it has altered the depth and acquisition of reading abilities
