Chocolate & Happiness!!!

When I am really stressed I usually resort to my one and only, my addiction, chocolate. There’s a long history of people using chocolate to make themselves happier, but the question still remains: is there a scientific basis behind it?  Recently, I came across facts that prove my theory:

One of the things that could account for the satisfaction we feel upon eating a lot of chocolate is that it’s so sweet and rich. Even dark chocolate has a high percentage of fat and sugar, and these properties stimulate the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is the part of our brain responsible for pleasing sensations. When we eat chocolate to improve your mood, the sensations distract you from whatever’s making you upset. In addition, chocolate can affect the amount of serotonin in the brain. This chemical is known for having an effect on mood, and is regulated by many anti-depressants. While the effect of chocolate is far less than that of medical remedies for depression, it does have a noticeable one on the way serotonin is released, so we feel happier.

  4. Most of the females are chocolate addicts, whenever I feel depressed I start eating chocolate without noticing that I’m eating too much. Although it have a lot of benefits in changing our mood, but some people cannot eat chocolate because of the high fat in it which may cause for them some heart problems, other may be obese and thus they should deprive themselves from eating chocolate. Also diabetic people will be deprived from chocolate to maintain their blood glucose at a moderate level. I feel sorry for people who cannot enjoy the sense of having a good mood after eating a lot of chocolate bars.

  6. Chocolate is the first luxury. It has so many things wrapped up in it: deliciousness in the moment, childhood memories, and that grin-inducing feeling of getting a reward for being good. Eating chocolate, as you mentioned Farah, entails great pleasure, but diabetic or obese people can enjoy dark chocolate, for semi joy, may God grant all people health and heal those who are suffering.

  7. Sure Ahlam, we should keep balance between our addiction on chocolate and our health and our body posture; so, here’s a solution: dark chocolate. Do you know that the darker the chocolate, the healthier it is for you. Cacao beans contain nutrients such as iron, potassium and fiber, with LOW CALORIES. Also a potent class of antioxidants called flavonoids. The higher the percentage of cacao in a chocolate bar, the darker the chocolate, and the higher it is in flavonoid antioxidants. These flavonoids appear to have beneficial effects on the body, such as relaxing blood vessels, promoting healthy circulation and playing a role in healthy blood pressure levels.

  8. Its no secret that most people, especially women seem to think that eating chocolate will improve their lousy mood. But I’m wondering what is wrong with my body that chocolate has no such effect on me. Chocolate in no way does it ever affect how I’m feeling! and that's why I do not like it much.
